News from the State President Picture of AEHC President Marietta Gutierrez, Mary Ann Shepherd, and Maureen Zoerner

The picture that is with this article is from the Country Woman Council (CWC) that Mary Ann Shepherd, President-Elect, Maureen Zoerner, Past President and myself, Marietta Gutierrez, President, went to in September in Lynchburg, Virginia. Again, I would like to thank you for the opportunity to attend these meetings and I hope that each of you will someday have the opportunity to do the same.

At each District Rally we voted on the new flags. The District flags will be double sided, County flags will be singlesided. We will also have new chair covers for the state meeting. The cost will be around $40.00 for each county and this includes flag, chair cover, stand and pole.
They are being made now and hope to have them ready for the March meeting at the 4-H Center. (Until they are made, we will not know the exact amount but will let you know as soon as possible.) Thanks to Cheryl Steward, Sebastian County, who is making all flags and Montie Ray from Sebastian County, who is making new flag poles and stands. This year is coming to a close and I would like to wish you all HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

There were 83 at the Mountain View Retreat. This activity will be conducted again next year about the same time as this year.

EHC District Rallies – Big Success

The first ever-three district rallies for EHC was held this year. A total of 461 leaders, agents and guests participated in the three district rallies in October. Elaine Stoll, Vice-president and the three district directors did an outstanding job planning the program around the theme, “Do You Know The Answer?” District rallies are conducted on odd-numbered calendar years and the purpose of the rallies is to focus on the EHC program emphasis. The program focus was selected by county
leaders at the March leadership workshop at the Arkansas 4-H Center. The major focus is health and physical activity and the minor focus is caregiving. Physicians from the Arkansas Department of Health gave excellent presentations regarding the
health of Arkansans.

screening was conducted at each of the
district rallies by volunteer nurses and
health department nurses.

Delta District Rally

Picture of Delta District MeetingThe ladies in the Delta District met for their Rally on October 23, 2003, in Brinkley. The meeting was held at the First Baptist Church with 114 members attending. Registration was handled by Associate District Directors Marilyn Shearin and Dixie Coleman. Morning refreshments were served by the ladies from Jefferson County. The group enjoyed muffins with their juice and coffee.

The general session was opened by Bettye Carter-Johnson, AEHC District Director. Catherine Carter, Monroe County EHC
President, gave the welcome address. The “Thought for the Day” was given by Faye Hudgins, Lonoke County EHC President. State President, Marietta Gutierrez, gave the President’s report with the Past President, Maureen Zoener, giving the
Officer Election 2004 report. Elaine Stoll, Vice-President gave the AEHC Major Education Emphasis report. Our special guest for the morning session was Dr. David Boren, Public Health Physician with the Arkansas Department of Health. Dr. Boren spoke on “Staying Healthy.” The ladies enjoyed a catfish feast with all the trimmings for the lunch break. After lunch, the Jefferson County ladies, along with the District Director, gave a EHC skit that all enjoyed. Dr. Russ Kennedy, Health and Aging Specialist, with the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, gave a report on “Walk Across Arkansas.” Associate Director, Marilyn Shearin, gave the roll call of Counties and Dixie Coleman, Associate Director, entertained the group with a creative game to distribute the door prizes. All enjoyed the Health Fair with blood pressure checks and nformation during the day directed by the Monroe County Health Department. Special thanks to Jennifer Thompson, Monroe County Agent, for all her assistance in planning a great day that was a very big success.

Ouachita District Rally
Joyce Hall, District AEHC Director

They all came…..yes, every county was present for the first Ouachita District EHC Rally. One hundred forty-seven attended
the meeting held at the Clark County Youth building in Arkadelphia on October 28.

Elaine Stoll, AEHC Vice-President, our two district directors, Jettie Williams of Little River County and Iva Jean Shaddock of Dallas County, did a great job with registration, roll call and door prize drawings. Dr. Jennifer Dillaha from the Arkansas Health Department did a great job with sharing the facts of the health of Arkansans. We were all challenged by Dr. Russ Kennedy, Health and Aging Specialist from the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension, to get more exercise and be healthier. Clark County members did a wonderful job with decorations and making the group feel welcomed. Each county president participated in the skit “Do You Know The Answer?” and each president gave a county report to the group of recent projects. A big thanks to my home county of Pulaski for doing the refreshments, blood pressure screenings and doing the “for sale” EHC items table.

Ozark District Rally

Picture of Ozark District MeetingKay Sanders-Chick, AEHC District Director, with Associate District Directors, Glenda Anderson and Ann Reynolds.

The Ozark District Rally was held on October 21, 2003, at the First Baptist Church in Clinton, Arkansas. Twenty-four counties were represented by a total of about 200 women and men. Guest speakers for the day were David Bourne,
M.D., Arkansas Department of Health, speaking on “Staying Healthy” and Dr. Russ Kennedy, Health and Aging
Specialist, University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, speaking on the “Walk Across Arkansas” program.

Due to re-districting, new county and district flags need to be made so Cheryl Stewart, from Crawford County, showed samples of the flags she has volunteered to make. It was decided to make the district flags double-sided with the district name on both sides of the flag and to make the county flags single-sided with the county name on one side. The flags will be prepared by Cheryl and sent to the individual counties to have their logo added. The flags are to be used at the State Meeting in June. Cheryl will also make new chair covers for use at the State Meeting. Ozark District will have white flags and chair covers, Ouachita District will have blue flags and chair covers and Delta District will have red flags and chair covers.

Montie Ray from Sebastian County brought a sample of the flag pole and stand he and his crew are making. The cost of the fabric, lettering, chair covers, pole, and stand will be assessed each county and is thought to be about $40.00.

Joyce Hall, Ouachita District Director, lead the group in an exciting skit entitled “Do You Know The Answer?” which brought Dr. Kennedy to comment that members of EHC have a lot of fun and don’t necessarily play by the rules! Other items of business were brought to the group’s attention by AEHC President, Marietta Gutierrez and AEHC Immediate Past President, Maureen Zoerner. Mary Askew, Associate District Director for the Ozark District, was presented a retirement gift as this will be her last District Rally. She is retiring at the end of the year. After retirement, Mary is planning to become a member of Boone County EHC!! Thanks to the following: The wonderful cooks for a great lunch; to Van Buren County for support in organizing the church facility; to Conway and Faulkner Counties for the refreshments; to B.J. Wheeler, Stone County, and Charlotte Lyke, Faulkner County, for volunteering to do blood pressure screenings; to AEHC Associate District Directors, Glenda Anderson and Ann Reynolds, for all their hard work in many aspects of the day’s program. Thanks also to AEHC Secretary, Dorothy Anderson; to Lee Carlson from Marion County; to Debi Morton from Van Buren County; Dorothy Roland from Cleburne County; AEHC Vice President Elaine Stoll; Edwina Conaway from Sebastian County; and, last, but not least, Betty Oliver, Volunteer Coordinator, for their help and assistance.

Yell County had the largest county delegation of the three rallies with 23 members and agent Connie Nelson.

EHC “For Sale” Items

As the holidays approach, don’t forget the “For Sale” items. They make great inexpensive and nice Christmas gifts. The
items are also great for membership expansion incentives. We have lots of cups from 2001 and 2002 for $1.00. There are no 2003 cups. We have shirts in black and red in most sizes except XXX Large. We have plenty of the EHC logo leather
coasters, lots of 2003 handbags and plenty of the tri-markers and writing pins.

We are on the web

The revised AEHC Handbook is now on our web site. It is filled with all kinds of
