Mary Ann Shepherd, AEHC State President

I cannot thank you enough for all that you did to make our State Meeting successful. The total AEHC volunteer hours for the past year was 26,211 and the value was $450,567.09.
I gathered this data in preparation for a report that I will be giving at the NVON meeting in July. Please put July 17-19, 2006, on your calendar for the NVON Meeting in Hot Springs. You will be getting more information on this as time goes by.

We still need to make breast pillows and cancer turbans for UAMS Cancer Research Center. Please remember the Christmas stockings that the nursery at UAMS wanted to send babies home in during December. We are placing a new cancer turban pattern on the EHC website. It is so attractive and is made with the eyelash yarn, or fun fur. Thanks to Lisa Boone, FCS Agent in Stone County, for giving us the pattern.

Over 700 attended the state meeting June 7-9 at the Hot Springs Convention Center. The sixteen-member planning committee did an excellent job planning and conducting the meeting. Please express your appreciation to these leaders who have worked hard for a year. Four members of the planning committee have served their two year terms and will be replaced by new chairs. These are the District Director representative and chairs for decorations, how to classes, and subject matter classes.

Excellent evaluations were given for many parts of the program, especially the last session with "The Omelet King". Next year, please remember to wear a sweater or jacket to the sessions in Horner Hall - lots of comments about the temperature! Your suggestions on the evaluations will be considered by the planning committee at the first meeting to plan for the 2006 meeting. You can email suggestions for classes, speakers, entertainment, and program format to boliver@uaex.edu.

New AEHC District Directors Elected

New district directors were elected at the AEHC meeting during the board meeting. These jobs are some of the hardest and most rewarding in this organization. One of their jobs is to order the Arkansas name tags and distribute them at the October district meetings. Send your orders to your district director by September 1. Check the handbook for more information on name tag orders.

Listed below are the district directors' name, address, phone number, email address, and a short informational bio of each.

The new Delta District Director is Janice Majors, 138 East Jackson, Monticello, AR 71655.
Phone: 870-367-3324, Email: jmajors0116@sbcglobal.net

Janice has been an EH club member for 10 years. She has been President of her local club and is the present Council President in Drew County. Janice has served on the State Planning Committee the past two years as the Chair for the how to classes. Janice's qualifications are not only experience in EHC but many other areas including teacher, pianist, Choir director for churches and Civic and Community Clubs. Janice is active in National and Arkansas Federation of Music Clubs.

Janice's FCS Agent is Donna Francis and Donna said: "Janice Majors is an excellent leader in Drew County. She has experience as a former school teacher and is a church musician. Janice also teaches private piano lessons. She is a good organizer and is familiar with Roberts Rules of Order. Janice's number one strength is her calm nature under pressure and she can think on her feet! She is a wonderful example of Christian character and can handle any situation with grace and dignity."

The new Ouachita District Director is Phyllis Pipkin, 108 Boulder Road, Royal AR, 71968.
Phone: 501-760-2872, Email: Sephpipkin@aol.com

Phyllis has been a club member for 9 years in Garland County. She has been President and Vice President of her local club and has been Treasurer, President-Elect and President of the Garland County Extension Homemakers Council. Phyllis is an active Church member, and a tremendous resource for 4-H. Phyllis and her husband Selwyn (Pip) were honored as "Friends of 4-H."

Phyllis' FCS Agent, Lisa Gilmore, said: "Phyllis Pipkin has demonstrated through service and experience that she is an excellent leader and is well suited for the office of Ouachita District Director. We in Garland County will be honored to share the expertise that we have been the fortunate recipients of with the rest of the state."

The new Ozark District Director is Glenda Anderson, 130 Art Lane, Russellville, AR 72802.
Phone: 479-967-4390, Email: grannyglenda@arkansas.net

Glenda has been a club member for 44 years, having served her local club as President and all other offices from 1975-2005. Other state committees that she has served on include finance and education. Glenda is active in church, quilters groups, and all types of community service projects. She has been active with 4-H and B & PW Club.

Glenda's FCS Agent, Jeri Vangilder said: "Glenda's leadership experience in her club and county, her church and other organizations has provided many opportunities for her to grow and develop as a leader. She can lead and motivate others. She will make a great District Director".

AEHC 2005 Opening Session

NVON To Meet In Hot Springs In 2006

The National Volunteer Outreach Network (NVON) is the organization that was started after the National Extension Homemakers Council disbanded a few years ago. Seven states are members of the organization. NVON was organized exclusively for educational and charitable purposes.

Arkansas will have several AEHC members attending this years' July 12-14 Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana. These members will present a skit to officially invite NVON to Hot Springs, Arkansas, on July 17-19, 2006. We need EHC members to volunteer for being hostesses, class instructors, and other jobs. The registration fee is $110.00 which includes 4 meals. Rooms are available at the Austin hotel. More information will be presented at the October District Rallies.

AEHC Helps UAMS Neonatal, UAMS Cancer Research and Arkansas Children's Hospital

EHC members have given generously of their time since July 1, 2004 to state wide community service projects. The AEHC Coordinator office has recorded these totals from the items that you have made and delivered or brought to the state office to be delivered to UAMS and Children's Hospital.

A total of 257 cancer turbans and 64 breast pillows, 244 baby blankets, 337 baby caps, 20 sets of booties, 25 bumper pads, 45 tote bags, 21 Christmas stockins, 258 teaching dolls and 56 twin coverlets were delivered to UAMS Cancer Research Center, UAMS Neonatal Nursery, and Arkansas Children's Hospital.

Please remember that our patterns are on the AEHC website and that there is a need for Christmas stockings for the babies to be sent home in during December. UAMS Cancer Research Center also needs breast pillows and cancer turbans.

For Your Consideration...AEHC Monthly Evaluation Forms

We are placing on the AEHC website an example of a monthly evaluation form that could be attached to the leader training packet. This form can be very valuable for collecting results of the program, volunteer hours, new members, members that need to be removed from the club roll, and locations of the next meeting.

This is only a suggestion, it could be used as is, or adapted to meet your needs.

A Special Day

May 10 was a special day for 50 Pulaski County leaders and guests. The leaders were guests for a luncheon prepared by Mrs. Jean Sugg at the Sugg home on the U of A Cammack Campus. The luncheon was a reward to leaders for local volunteer work in Pulaski County. The group also saw a beautiful fruit, vegetable, and herb garden near the home that the Pulaski County Master Gardner's maintain. Special guests were Joy Buffalo, FCS Agent, Beth Phelps, CEA Staff Chair, Betty Oliver, FCS/AEHC Volunteer Coordinator, and Dr. Lynn Russell, State Leader - Family and Consumer Sciences.
